Enhancing Psychosocial Well-being at Kumba Principal Prison
The Network for Community Development is proud to share the successful implementation of our Psychosocial Support Services at Kumba Principal Prison.
From November 2024 to February 2025, 56 inmates (36 males, 20 females, aged 18-55) received both group and individual counseling from a dedicated mental health specialist. Our group sessions resulted in a 95% improvement in well-being, while individual sessions achieved a 100% improvement, as measured by the WHO5 scale.
Key objectives included alleviating trauma, reducing violent behavior, enhancing social and coping skills, promoting self-awareness, and preventing self-harm. Participants reported relief from psychosomatic symptoms and valued having a safe space to express themselves and learn new coping strategies.
Observations revealed the need for comprehensive mental health care, including pharmacological support, and further training for prison officers to better understand mental health challenges. Our ongoing efforts and future partnerships will ensure sustained support for inmate rehabilitation and positive community reintegration.
